How many times have you worried or been impatient when your child repeats the same activity over and over again? Pouring water from one glass to another glass and back again into the first glass …On and On and On!
Honestly, what worries you, signals Joy to me!! Now, why would I say that?
Because THIS is what a child of 2 ½ to 3 ½ years ought to be doing.This is the child who has gained control over his movements and is now trying to master them.
Importance of Repetition
By repeating the movement, the child is gaining control and eventually mastery over it.
If you are an aware parent and allow the child to repeat the activity, you know that the child will lose interest in it sooner or later. Why does that happen? Because this child by now, has gained mastery over the movements that he was struggling with. The child now moves on to other conquests.
Is it all as simple as this? Yes!! And No!!
Yes as in the child has made the conquest of mastery and has moved on. But scientifically something else is happening in the child.
Science Behind Repetition
Repetition leads to refinement of movement, leading to perfection. This is a natural urge in the child. {you can believe this when you disturb the child in an activity and he/she screams his/her head off}.
- In the process of repetition and refinement, the child is learning how to do things and storing it for future reference.
- The urge to do it, the understanding of the movement and knowing the motor movement, all get together and lead to a sense of satisfaction (Psychomotor Unity). This state of satisfaction lays the foundation for building concentration.
The fact is, THIS is the time for the development of ability to concentrate. He does this by repeating the activity hundreds of times, all by his choice.
Supporting Repetition
Unfortunately, we as parents or educators deprive the child of the satisfaction of a job well done and reaching that state of concentration, by not allowing the child to repeat activities.
When the same child comes to Class 8th, we want him to concentrate and study. We yell at the child, “Why can’t you sit for five minutes and study?”
Can the child really concentrate by us pressurising? During his early childhood years when the child was preparing to concentrate, we stopped him. And now, when it is way past that time of development, we nag the child to sit and study. What ideally needs to be done in peace and clarity of mind has become murky because of this pressure.
All things being equal, the child who has not been disturbed when he was repeating activities at 2 1/2 years is more likely to reach a state of concentration at 14 years of age, than the one who was disturbed often during his early childhood development years.
